Seasons and Signs: Recent Sculptures by Holly Anderson
At The: John Steffl Gallery
January 12 – March 19, 2006
Opening Reception, Thurs, Jan 12, 5—7 p.m.
Dialogue with the artist, Thurs, Jan 19, 6—7 p.m.
Ceramics has been an important sculptural medium in western
art for centuries. Although we are most accustomed
to beautifully made items such as bowls, vases, and teapots
that are hand-built or thrown on a potter’s wheel,
the work of Holly Anderson explores ceramic work that is
sculptural rather than functional or decorative in nature.
In her artist’s statement Anderson writes: “Formally,
I draw from Scandinavian folk art, modern design and Japanese
aesthetics along with imagery of organic objects, toys,
vehicles, musical instruments and games. Games provide
a familiar, yet intriguing, format while referencing strategy
and the variables of a life experience. As I play
with the arrangement of these forms, stacking, climbing,
and precarious balance are reoccurring themes that similarly
reference the human condition.”
Anderson is now an Assistant Professor of Art at UMD and
will also be teaching Creative Wheel-Throwing, beginning
January 26, here at the Duluth Art Institute.

David Salmela is a self-trained architect practicing in
Duluth, Minnesota. His work is rooted in the principal
of modernism as well as the founding influence of the vernacular
of Minnesota’s immigrants. Most of his works
exist from the northeast tip of the arrowhead’s wilderness,
down the eastern edge of Minnesota to Lake Pepin. Since
1985 his projects have won fifteen AIA Minnesota Honor
Awards and six Wood Design Awards. 1998 brought an
Architectural Records Record Houses Award for the Emerson
Residence, and a National AIA Honor Award for Architecture
for the Brandenburg’s Ravenwood Studio. In
2005 his Community Design of Jackson Meadow, Marine on
St. Croix won a National AIA Award for Regional & Urban
Design. Also this year he won a National AIA Award
for Architecture for the Emerson Sauna. This spring
the monograph, Salmela/Architect, written by University
of Minnesota Dean of Architecture, Thomas Fisher, was published. David’s
work has been featured in over 100 articles in regional,
national and international publications.
The exhibit in the Morrison Gallery will consist of models,
drawings, photographs that will show a cross section of
his architectural work.
By Design: The Home Show

Innovative design has become an integral part of our lives
over the past decade. Most of us, according to market
research, are willing to pay just a little more for designer
cloths, designer furniture, designer cookware. For
just a few dollars more one can even have a designer toilet
plunger (by Michael Grave at Target). “By Design” will
present a tapestry of designer items that could be found
in the setting of the home: furniture, textiles,
and ceramics by area artists as well as designer house
wares that can be purchased at area stores such as Target—all
chosen and arranged for presentation in the Steffl Gallery. Kirsten
Aune will participate as a curator and Mark Sherman, Gordon
Manary, Kerry Donars, Michael Cousino, Dan Edmunds, Andrew
Webster, Jon Helstrom, Paul Helstrom, and other area artist/designers
will be represented in this exciting collaborative project. Come
and see how the esthetic surroundings of our lives can
be improved and beautified ”By Design.”
