Granted over $131,000 to support the arts, culture and history
in the region. Increased membership by 17% to over 800 members.
Experienced an 83% increase in annual gifts. Adopted investment,
spending and grant making policies. Presented the first
annual Circle of Friends celebration to honor contributions
our members make that enrich our region with arts and cultural
opportunities.
2000 The Depot Foundation presented the first annual
arts and cultural awards recognizing outstanding accomplishments
in the areas of initiative, community enrichment and lifetime
achievement. Membership increased by 20% to over 700 members.
Grant awards totaled $105,873. Governance documents were
reviewed and updated.
1999
Successfully matched a challenge gift increasing assets
in the Minnesota Ballet's Marsi Fund by 32%. Annual giving
increased by 25% over the previous year. Awarded $99,000
in grants. The Julia Marshall Youth Art Fund to benefit
youth art education at the Duluth Art Institute was established
by Marshall family members Patricia Lenz Spencer and Michael
Spencer. Hosted a Mid-Summer Night at the Depot.
1998
Hosted You Opened Your Hearts, We Open Our Doors
celebrating arts and cultural community contributions. Experienced
a 15.56% return on our investments. Awarded $148,688 in
grants including a $98,623 grant to support the major building
renovations efforts of the Depot and a $16,500 grant award
to the Lake Superior Railroad Museum as matching funds for
a $120,000 project.
1997
Awarded $138,273 in grants, $105,000 of which supported
three major projects of the Depot building including a cooperative
Energy Project with St. Louis County. Unrestricted contributions
more than double from the that of the prior year. Total
return on investments of 12.55%. Annual gifts totaled $157,314.
1996
Endowment and managed funds had a net investment return
of over 9%. Awarded $128,496 in grants. Prindle/Wood Family
Memorial Endowment was established by Cornelius A. Wood
to endow scientific, literary, artistic, cultural and educational
purposes of the Depot Foundation.
1995
The Depot Foundation Board of Directors made a 5-year commitment
of available grant funds from its unrestricted fund to support
the St. Louis County Heritage and Arts Center major renovation
project. Awarded grants totaling $142,445 including a $90,200
grant to the Depot. Assets totaled $4,122,460. The board
of directors hired its own staff and contracted services
back to the Depot.
1994
Received $65,093 in annual gifts. Assets exceeded $ 3 million
dollars. Awarded
$130,799 in grants.
1993
Grant awards totaled $115,000, including a $93,850 grant
to the St. Louis Heritage & Arts Center for maintenance
projects, building improvements, energy management projects,
and joint leasehold improvements.
1992
Awarded $106,000 in grants. Total assets equaled $2,983,232.
Total contributions reached the three million dollar mark,
the unrestricted fund accounted for over two million dollars.
1991
Distribution increased by 5%. Grants totaling $95,000 were
awarded for maintenance projects and technological advancements
of the Depot and its participating organizations. The Depot
Foundation received its largest gift in the amount
of $345,346.
1990
Granted $90,100 to the Depot and participating organizations,
a 20% increase in awards from the year before.
1989
Unrestricted and restricted funds up 15% and 18%, respectively.
Grants totaled $74,956, including $61,661 to the St. Louis
County Heritage & Arts Center for building maintenance
and Depot Theatre carpeting and sound system.
1988
Endowment totaled $1,279,447. Membership more than tripled
in seven years, growing to 295 members, which included 16
Heritage Circle and 140 Magic Circle members. Contributions
for the year were $141,860.
1987
Funds available for distribution increased by 34% from 1986.
Awarded $42,379 in grants. A cumulative total of $173,936
has been granted from the unrestricted fund since the first
distribution in 1980.
1986
Reached one million dollars in total contributions, the
board of directors determined the Foundation is a mature,
established organization. $32,000 awarded in grants from
the unrestricted fund.
1985
Annual gifts equaled $205,564. Awarded $28,000 in grants
for capital and general operating needs.
1984
Viola Hart Endowment benefiting the womens exhibition
program at the Duluth Art institute was established in honor
of Viola Hart, a long-time Art Institute member and artist.
Magic Circle membership increased by 41%.
1983
Contributions totaled $121,606. Distributed $9,814, a portion
of earned income on unrestricted funds, to aid in the completion
of the Depot Square project. Grant awards exceeded $26,440.
1982
Yearly contributions were $150,772. Membership increased
by almost 75%, totaling 148 Depot and Heritage Circle members.
1981
The Foundation recognized eighty-five members. $12,000 was
distributed to support the hiring of a volunteer coordinator
and the development of a graphics plan for the Depot. The
Foundation opened an office in the Depot. Assets totaled
$239,000.
1980
The Depot Foundation had a net worth of $126,000. The Foundation
awarded grants for the purchase of a portable stage and
an acoustical shell for the Great Hall in the Depot.
1979
On March 29, 1979 The Depot Foundation was established as
a charitable, non-profit organization incorporated in the
State of Minnesota with a purpose to receive, invest and
disburse funds on behalf of the arts and heritage of the
Duluth community and greater surrounding area through the
efforts of Dorothy Congdon, Karen Fillenworth, John C. Hunner,
Arthur C. Josephs, Sylvester Laskin, Caroline Marshall,
Julia Marshall, Donald B. Shank and Donald Wirtanen. Elected
President: Don Wirtanen, Vice President: Arthur Josephs,
Secretary: Karen Fillenworth, and Treasurer: Robert Fischer.
The Foundation announced that an endowment was being created
with income dedicated primarily to the St. Louis County
heritage and Arts Center and the member organizations: the
Duluth Art Institute, the Duluth Ballet, the Duluth Playhouse,
the A. M. Chisholm Museum, the St. Louis County Historical
Society, the Duluth-Superior Symphony, Matinee Musicale
and the Lake Superior Museum of Transportation.
